Mother's Day is a holiday rooted in love and gratitude for the women who gave us life and raised us. But what is its origin and how has it evolved over time?
The history of Mother 's Day dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, where the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele were honored with festivals dedicated to them. However, the modern version of this celebration has its roots in the 19th century, in the United States.
Activist Ann Jarvis was one of the pioneers of this holiday. After the American Civil War, Jarvis began a campaign to establish a day dedicated to honoring mothers as an act of reconciliation and peacemaking. In 1908, she organized a memorial service in honor of her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, who had worked tirelessly to improve health and sanitation conditions in her community.

Ann Jarvis's movement gained momentum and in 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day , making the celebration official nationwide.
Since then, Mother's Day has become an internationally recognized holiday, although the dates of celebration vary by country. In many places, such as the United States and Canada, it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, while in others, such as Mexico and much of Latin America, Mother's Day is celebrated on May 10 .
